Jack Hinshelwood has said the support of his dad - former Albion player Adam - has been key to the success of his blossoming career.
Adam made 113 appearances for Albion before having to call time on his playing career at the age of 26 due to knee injuries.
He has since climbed through the managerial ranks and is now in charge of National League York City.
“My dad took his first role as a manager at Selsey in 2012, so I would have been seven years old and since then I've always been around a first-team dressing room,” Jack explained.
“I'd be in there after a 5-0 loss away at Hassocks or somewhere, where he's gone mad and is effing and blinding. That was one thing my dad was great at as well. He said, ‘whether you're playing Roma away or Midhurst away, I’ll always be there supporting’.
“I've heard that from a young age, so it wasn’t really a shock [when he was promoted to the first team]. It's a big change going from an under-21 dressing room to a first-team dressing room, and sometimes it can take people a while to adapt, but I think having that experience from a young age helped me settle in quickly.
“I still love the non-league pyramid where my dad's involved now. I still watch his games as much as possible.”
The 19-year-old made 12 Premier League appearances before his season was curtailed by a foot injury but is doing his rehab at the moment with a view to returning in time for pre-season training.
Jack says he has been able to lean on his dad’s experiences to ensure he keeps a level head.
“My dad retired at 26 which was really tough for him. That's something that he wouldn't have planned before going into the game.
“So I know not to get too high or too low. I was so lucky to have my dad, my granddad, my great uncle Martin, even my great granddad who was around for quite a while. to learn from. They would tell me stories and stuff so I was very lucky, I think it really has helped. I still look forward to seeing them after a game."
Jack says his dad has allowed him to follow his own path.
“He'd let the coaches say what they need to say, he wouldn't get too involved," Jack added. "After every game, he'd pick one thing I did well and one thing he thought I could do better. I think that's still the same now.
“I never felt any pressure. They'll be proud of me, whatever standard I play. I was always going to play no matter what standard. I just love the game. Whether I was here or playing with the under-21s or the under-18s in the FA Youth Cup, I always give my all.”
